Coconut Whipped Cream: A Dairy-Free Topping That’s Light, Fluffy, and Dreamily Delicious

This coconut whipped cream is an easy plant-based alternative to traditional whipped cream, made with coconut cream. It’s the perfect topping for desserts, fruit, hot drinks, and more—offering all the indulgence without any dairy. Keep a chilled can in your fridge and you’re always just minutes away from a luscious, cloud-like treat.

The History and Inspiration Behind This Recipe

Whipped cream has long been a staple in desserts around the world, traditionally made with heavy dairy cream. This dairy-free version is a more recent addition to the culinary world, taking advantage of the naturally rich texture of coconut cream—an ingredient rooted in Southeast Asian cuisine. When I first tried this vegan whipped cream alternative, all I could think was, “How is this not everywhere?” Since then, it’s become one of my favorite ways to add an elegant, plant-based touch to desserts.

Why You’ll Love This Coconut Whipped Cream

If you love a smooth, airy finish to your desserts, this whipped cream delivers that and more. It’s naturally dairy-free, just slightly sweet, and rich enough to feel indulgent without being heavy. Unlike traditional whipped cream, it holds up better in the fridge and pairs beautifully with both sweet and savory dishes. Best of all, it comes together with just a few ingredients and a chilled can of coconut cream.

Fun Flavor Variations For Your Coconut Whipped Cream

Why settle for plain when you can get creative with different flavor combinations:

  • Vanilla Bean: Add vanilla bean paste or the seeds from half a pod for warm, floral depth.

  • Citrus Zest: A bit of lemon, lime, or orange zest brightens the flavor and adds a fresh twist.

  • Maple Spice: Mix in maple syrup with a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a cozy autumnal flavor.

  • Cocoa: Stir in a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder to create a light, mousse-like chocolate version.

  • Espresso: A dash of espresso powder or a splash of brewed coffee gives it a bold, mocha kick.

Serving Ideas For Your Coconut Whipped Cream

This Coconut Whipped Cream is incredibly versatile and can be used in various ways:

  • Top Desserts: Add a dollop to pies, crisps, and cobblers for a creamy, decadent finish.

  • Serve with Fruit: Use as a dip for fresh berries, grilled peaches, or citrus segments. This is the perfect pairing of strawberry shortcake!

  • Layer into Parfaits: Spoon between layers of granola and fruit for a light, no-bake dessert.

  • Upgrade Hot Drinks: Add a swirl to lattes, hot cocoa, or chai tea for a café-style finish.

  • Frost Simple Cakes: Spread onto cooled cakes or cupcakes as a light, creamy frosting alternative.

Tips For The Best Coconut Whipped Cream

For the best results, follow these simple tips to perfect your Coconut Whipped Cream every time:

  • Use Coconut Cream: Look for coconut cream, it has a higher fat content and will result in the richest and fluffiest coconut cream.

  • Chill Overnight: Place the can in the fridge overnight so the cream solidifies and separates.

  • Scoop the Cream Only: Leave behind the watery liquid and use just the firm top layer.

  • Chill Your Tools: A cold mixing bowl and whisk help keep the whipped cream stable and fluffy.

  • Sweeten to Taste: Start with a small amount of sweetener and adjust based on what you’re pairing it with.

Coconut whipped cream is one of those recipes that’s almost too simple to believe—but the result is anything but basic. Equipment

  • Stand Mixer or Electric Mixer

Ingredients

  • 1 13.5 oz can Coconut Cream Chilled in the fridge for 1 to 2 days
  • 1 tbsp Powdered Sugar Sifted, you can add more if you would like a sweeter whipped cream
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract or Vanilla Bean Paste

Instructions

  • Place your can of coconut cream in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days.
  • When you are ready to make, chill your mixing bowl for 15 minutes in the fridge before whipping the cream.
  • Open your can of coconut cream and scoop out the hardened coconut cream. Pour the coconut water into a separate storage container and use that in a future smoothie recipe.
  • Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, fluff the coconut cream for 2 to 3 minutes. Add in the sifted powdered sugar and vanilla, if using. Then mix for an additional minute, until smooth and creamy.
  • Note, that if the coconut cream is too thick and stiff (after adding your sweetener), you can thin it down with a little of the reserved coconut water. This will help to make it smooth and creamy. Just add a little bit at a time while mixing. I normally end up having to add 1 to 2 tbsp to get the whipped cream to my desired texture!
  • Use the coconut whipped cream right away or store it in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to one week. When you go to use it out of the fridge, gently mix before serving.
