Tips for the Best Fruit Spread

To get the perfect fruit spread every time, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use Ripe, Flavorful Fruit: The better the fruit, the better the spread! Opt for ripe, in-season produce.

  • Adjust Sweetness to Taste: Some fruits are naturally sweeter than others, so taste and adjust accordingly.

  • Simmer Gently: Cooking fruit over low heat helps preserve its natural flavors while thickening the spread.

  • Thicken Naturally: If your fruit isn’t releasing enough pectin, add chia seeds or let it simmer longer to reach the desired consistency.

  • Store Properly: Keep it refrigerated in an airtight container and enjoy within a week, or freeze for longer storage.

Homemade fruit spread is an easy, wholesome way to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruit without unnecessary additives. Whether you love classic berry combinations or adventurous tropical flavors, this spread is a versatile and delicious addition to your kitchen.

Course: Sauce
Cuisine: British
Keyword: Condiment, Fruit, Gluten-Free, Oil-Free, Sweet, Tangy
Servings: 1.5 Cups

Equipment

  • Sauce Pan / Small Pot

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fruit of choice Can use fresh or frozen fruit
  • ¼ cup Cane Sugar, Maple Syrup, or Agave
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice About the juice of 1 lemon
  • ⅓ to ½ cup Water

Instructions

  • Add the fruit, your chosen sweetener, lemon juice, and a splash of water to a small saucepan on medium-low heat. Mix occasionally and cook for around 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Take the back of a spoon or potato masher and squash the fruit to help break it down into your desired texture. I like a few fruit chunks in my jam.
  • Here you can add the water to reach the desired consistency for your spread. I prefer a very thick spread, so I normally add minimal water. If you do add water here, cook it for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Once you have reached the desired texture and consistency for your spread remove from heat and allow to cool.
  • Once cooled, add to airtight glass jars either to be frozen or stored in the fridge. This spread will keep in the fridge for a week. If you freeze the spread, it will keep in the freezer for 6 months.
