This plant-based Puppy Chow is the nostalgic, crunchy, chocolatey treat that instantly brings joy to any gathering—no baking required! Crispy cereal gets coated in a rich mixture of melted dark chocolate and peanut butter, then tossed generously in powdered sugar until each piece is perfectly sweet and totally addictive. It’s one of my go-to recipes for the holidays and especially for New Year’s Eve because it’s incredibly easy to whip up when you’re hosting and need a quick dessert or snack that everyone will devour. Whether it’s for a cozy night in, a festive party, or last-minute holiday entertaining, this treat is always a total crowd pleaser!

The History and Inspiration Behind This Recipe

Puppy Chow—also lovingly known as Muddy Buddies—is a true Midwestern classic, the kind of treat that showed up at every school event, potluck, and holiday party when I was growing up. It wasn’t just a dessert—it was currency. At elementary school bake sales, Puppy Chow was the ultimate commodity. Kids would trade it like gold, swapping little baggies of the powdered sugar–coated cereal for stickers, pencils, snacks, or whatever treasure we were obsessed with that week. It always sold out first, and if you were lucky enough to snag a bag, you knew you were in for the best treat of the day.

That nostalgia is exactly why I wanted to bring a plant-based version to the blog. It holds all the classic flavors—chocolate, peanut butter, sweet crunch—while feeling just as fun, messy, and shareable as it did back then. It’s simple, comforting, and always a crowd pleaser, whether you bring it to a holiday gathering, whip it up for New Year’s Eve, or just want a cozy throwback treat at home.

Why You’ll Love This Puppy Chow

You’ll love this Puppy Chow because it’s quick to make, effortlessly delicious, and perfect for feeding a crowd during the holiday season. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter creates a rich, crave-worthy coating, while the powdered sugar adds that classic snowy finish. Whether you serve it at holiday parties, pack it up as a homemade gift, or set it out for a New Year’s Eve celebration, it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone who tries it.

Fun Flavor Variations For Your Puppy Chow

Why settle for plain when you can get creative with different flavor combinations:

  • Peppermint crunch: Add crushed candy canes to the powdered sugar before tossing for a festive winter twist that brings a refreshing, minty bite.

  • Spiced hot chocolate version: Mix a pinch of cinnamon and a little cocoa powder into the powdered sugar to create a cozy, hot-chocolate-inspired flavor profile.

  • Almond joy style: Add shredded coconut and use almond butter instead of peanut butter to channel candy-bar vibes with nutty richness and tropical sweetness.

  • Maple-pecan blend: Drizzle a touch of maple syrup into the melted chocolate mixture and fold in toasted pecans for a deeper, caramel-like holiday flavor.

Serving Ideas For Your Puppy Chow

This Puppy Chow is incredibly versatile and can be used in various ways:

  • Holiday party bowl: Serve in a big festive bowl for a grab-by-the-handful snack that guests will gather around during holiday and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

  • Edible gifts: Pack portions into jars or treat bags for a nostalgic, charming homemade gift perfect for teachers, neighbors, or coworkers.

  • Movie-night snack: Pair it with your favorite holiday or NYE movies for a cozy binge-worthy night in with friends or family.

  • Hot cocoa topper: Sprinkle a handful over warm plant-based hot cocoa for a fun, melty, crunchy topping that elevates your mug to dessert status.

  • Winter trail mix: Combine with pretzels, nuts, or festive chocolate candies for a mix-and-match snack you can enjoy all week long.

Tips For The Best Puppy Chow

For the best results, follow these simple tips to perfect your Puppy Chow every time:

  • Use a large mixing bowl: This helps coat the cereal evenly without crushing it, ensuring each piece gets plenty of chocolate and peanut butter goodness.

  • Work quickly while warm: Toss the cereal with the warm chocolate and peanut butter mixture immediately so it coats smoothly and adheres well to the powdered sugar.

  • Let it cool completely: Spread the Puppy Chow on a sheet pan before storing so it sets properly and stays crisp instead of turning soft or clumpy.

Servings: 8 Cups

Equipment

  • Microwave Safe Bowl or Small Pot
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheets

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Dark Chocolate Chips
  • cups Smooth Peanut Butter
  • 7 cups Rice Chex Cereal
  • cups Powdered Sugar

Instructions

  • Melt peanut butter and chocolate together, either on the stovetop or in the microwave. Make sure the mixture if totally smooth with no chunks of chocolate or peanut butter remaining.
  • Next, add 4 cups of cereal to a large bowl and pour 1 cup of the chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Add 4 more cups of cereal to the bowl, then pour the remaining chocolate and peanut butter mixture on top and stir until the cereal is evenly coated.
  • Let the mixture cool slightly, but not too much because you do not want it to harden. Let it cool for maybe 5 minutes or until it has reached room temperature. Once your mixture is at room temperature, add 1 cup of powdered sugar. Mix until combined. Let the mixture chill for another 5 minutes, then continue to add the powdered sugar ¼ cup, up to 1 ½ cups total, at a time and mix until you have coated all the cereal in the powdered sugar.
  • Once you have coated all the cereal, spread it out on baking sheets to ensure that each piece is totally chilled before serving or storing. This helps to ensure all the pieces stay nice and crunchy!
  • Storage Instructions: Store the Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days; it stays crisp, sweet, and delicious without losing its texture.
