Pinto Refried Beans: A Flavorful, Creamy Classic for Any Meal

Refried beans are a staple in many Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes, and these pinto refried beans are the perfect addition to any taco, burrito, or bowl. Made with simple ingredients and packed with flavor, this homemade version is easy to prepare and is a great plant-based alternative to the canned version. Smooth, creamy, and savory, these refried beans will elevate any meal, making them a go-to for meal prepping or as a side dish.

Inspired by Traditional Mexican Refried Beans

Refried beans are deeply rooted in traditional Mexican cuisine. The term “refried” is a bit of a misnomer, as the beans are typically cooked once and then mashed and fried, not fried twice. In Mexico, refried beans are often made with pinto beans or black beans and are a staple in many homes, served as a side dish or as a filling in tacos, burritos, and quesadillas.

Mexican refried beans are known for their creamy texture and savory depth of flavor. They’re typically cooked with onions, garlic, and sometimes a bit of lard, then mashed and refried to enhance the richness and flavor. While this plant-based version swaps out the lard for avocado oil (or another plant-based fat), the essence of Mexican refried beans remains intact — rich, comforting, and full of bold, hearty flavor. These beans are the perfect homage to the traditional dish, capturing the savory, satisfying nature of Mexican cuisine while remaining completely plant-based.

Why You’ll Love These Pinto Refried Beans

These pinto refried beans are rich and velvety, thanks to the use of pinto beans which have a naturally creamy texture when cooked. The flavors are developed with a bit of sautéed onion, garlic, and spices that infuse the beans with depth and warmth. By mashing them to your preferred consistency, you can make them as smooth or chunky as you like. What’s more, this recipe is incredibly customizable — you can control the amount of heat and adjust seasonings to suit your taste. Whether you’re serving them as a side, spreading them in a burrito, or using them as a dip, they’re a satisfying and nourishing addition to any meal.
